Capabilities in detail
Jabber is an open standard communication protocol (XMPP), as well as an enterprise-level communications solution from Cisco. Jabborate lets you collaborate with anyone on IBM Connections by exchanging instant messages or making audio and video calls. Jabborate achieves this by integrating IBM Connections with Jabber SDK for Web, i.e. Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and Cisco Unified Presence(CUP).
Jabborate uses IBM Connections user directory to build a contact list automatically. It extends the existing user interface within Connections, while keeping the same look and feel by adding its own visual components such as “click-to-chat” and “click-to-call” buttons, and presence status. You can view one’s presence status by simply looking at his or her profile card. Sending an instant message or starting voice and video call with any of your connections is as simple as clicking a button.
First, you need to install Cisco Web Communicator browser plugin (part of Jabber SDK for Web) in order to be able to make audio or video calls. With the plugin installed, Jabborate will allow you to communicate to anyone on your IBM Connections or any other web-based system that has been integrated with Jabborate.
Jabborate keeps all open communication channels in a separate browser window. This allows you to interact with contacts and use the system at the same time. You can open several browser tabs containing different pages of IBM Connections and manage your chat or calls from any of them.
You can start a chat session with several contacts from your social network simultaneously and Jabborate will keep each conversation in a separate tab within the chat pop-up. You can close or minimize the chat window at any time without losing track of the conversation: receiving a new instant message will open it again if it was closed or pop it up if was minimized.
Jabborate also provides you with the ability to start a chat session with more than one participant. You can create a new chat room and invite participants from his or her contact list. The chat room appears as a new contact in the Jabborate contact list, so you can access it even after the chat window has been closed. The chat room exists until its owner closes it.
You can start a voice or video call to anyone by pressing the “click-to-call” button on their profile. You can also dial a phone number directly using Jabborate's dialer keypad. This allows you to contact people who are not on your IBM Connections contact list. The conversation window displays information for all active calls as well as tools to manage the ongoing conversations. You can start or stop your video streaming, mute/unmute your microphone, or end the current conversation. The video call window also contains a video preview, which enables you to preview the camera output before joining a conversation.
Jabborate will support IBM SmartCloud deployments as well as on-premise. The SmartCloud requires a different approach to the integration (server-side vs client-side) but the end-user experience is identical.
Extend Jabborate with Jabber Guest
Jabborate adds real-time communication options to everyone using IBM Connections inside the enterprise. In order to extend the same options to anyone outside the enterprise, we recommend Jabber Guest. Jabber Guest enables outside users to connect to specific endpoints via a web browser or a mobile device. By combining Jabber Guest to Jabborate, your enterprise will enable real-time communication for everyone: employees, customers, partners, and suppliers.
